Chin surgery (Mentoplasty/Genioplasty)

This procedure enhances the chin by either an implant or surgery on the bone.

Indication of Surgery

  • Microgenia: small chin
  • Macrogenia: large chin

Surgical Procedure

Implant placement can be done in local anaesthetic however bone surgery is done in general anaesthetic. Incision is made in the mouth so no external scar in most of the cases. Pocket is made in front of front of lower jaw bone and implant placed and secured. If bony advancement or reduction is done instead of implant, approach is the same and osteotomies (bone cuts) are made.

 

Possible Complications

  • Poor aesthetic result, asymmetry, blood collection, infection, implant extrusion, nerve injury leading to numbness or drooling.

Aftercare

Discharged on same day. Look for signs of infection. Soft diet and regular mouth wash are advised. Stiches are absorbable for intra oral approach and don’t require removal.
